2N® PICard: Our New Solution for Secure Card Management

Keep up with rising modern security threats by providing a completely secure door access control system. 2N® PICard is a user-friendly, flexible solution for encrypting secured RFID cards

Why do we need secured cards?

door access control systemRFID cards are the most widely used access credential on the market: yet, despite this, a vast number of door access control systems are still relying on outdated 125 kHz technology from the 1990s. These cards have only a UID (CSN) identifier, which can be read by any reader – and given the frequency of security breaches nowadays, that’s worrying. They’re not secured and are very easy to clone.

So, how can you make this popular access credential totally secure? Choose an RFID standard designed to eliminate these threats: MIFARE® DESFire®, a technology developed by NXP and the best in terms of speed, performance, and cost-efficiency.

Secure cards with flexibility: introducing 2N® PICard

2N’s new, unique cryptographic solution is built on this technology and provides Protected Identity Credentials (PIC). 2N® PICard:

  • Delivers a completely secure door access control system
  • Combines a high level of security with a simple workflow
  • Offers flexibility for both facility managers and system integrators

How does it work?

The heart of the entire solution is 2N® PICard Commandera software application that allows administrators to create a unique cryptographic keyset for every site. Keysets are based on the main encryption key (MEK): from which encryption keys and reading keys are derived.

Encryption keys are used to encrypt new credentials on MIFARE® DESFire® EV2/EV3 cards via a 2N USB reader. Reading keys are exported and uploaded either directly to the 2N devices installed onsite or to the 2N® Access Commander that distributes them to connected 2N IP intercoms and 2N Access Unit readers.

What are the benefits?

Multi-level security: the many security measures including symmetric (AES-128) and asymmetric (ECDSA) encryption, plus the master encryption being in the hands of the customer (and more), eliminates the possibility of card copying or eavesdropping.

Flexibility: 2N® PICard is suitable for both facility managers managing single buildings and system integrators with both single buildings and multiple sites. Integrators can also offer secure card management as a service.

It’s both user-friendly & highly capable: The entire solution is designed so that the user doesn’t need to know anything about MIFARE® DESFire® technology and is still able to upload secure credentials onto the cards.

Compatible 2N devices

2N® PICard credentials can be read by the vast majority of newly released 2N readers (13,56 MHz). We’ve also re-made our current multi-frequency readers that combine Bluetooth & RFID / Touch Keypad & RFID, and equipped them with our own 2N RFID chip to ensure that they support 2N® PICard technology. Please note these readers have different order numbers. The full list of supported devices can be found in the leaflet or on our web page.
