Learn why prioritizing quality and reliability in IP access control systems ensures long-term protection, minimizes risks, and provides peace of mind for property owners and facility managers.
Not all IP access control systems are created equal. While some solutions may appear cost-effective initially, a lack of reliability or quality can lead to security breaches, operational disruptions, and costly maintenance issues in the long run.
The innovation-reliability paradox: why you should balance both
Innovation and reliability are contrasting principles. An innovative new invention is, well, ‘new’ and needs time and thorough testing to be proven to work reliably – after which it can lose that innovative edge. However, choosing a manufacturer that balances innovation with reliability will work in your favor.
Innovation in IP access control is advancing rapidly, introducing increasingly vital features like mobile access, cloud-based management, and more. However, such vital technological and security-enhancing advancements must not come at the expense of reliability. A cutting-edge access system is only effective if it works consistently under real-world conditions.
At 2N, we challenge this paradox of innovation and reliability by combining modern technology with meticulous quality control. Our research and development teams do not launch new features or devices hastily – they rigorously test every innovation in real-world environments to ensure we deliver dependable solutions. This balance allows us to provide future-ready access control systems with advanced features that our customers can count on.

The role of durability in long-term security
Physical durability is a crucial factor in determining the reliability of an access control system. Devices exposed to extreme weather conditions, heavy usage, or potential vandalism must be built to withstand these challenges.
A cheap, low-quality IP access control device will not be durable. It will have fragile housing/build materials made from thin plastic, which is easily broken and has poor weather resistance. Quality components and robust materials (such as tempered glass, aluminum, and reinforced polycarbonate casings) are essential, particularly when choosing an IP intercom that will be installed outside or in areas with an increased risk of impact, such as parking garages.
Industry standards, including ingress protection (IP) ratings for resistance to dust and water and impact protection (IK) ratings for physical durability, are key indicators of the quality of the device you’re using. Look for IP65+ and IK08+ ratings as a benchmark.
2N recently upgraded our IP and IK testing processes in line with the new, more rigorous requirements to ensure our products remain operational even in demanding environments. This emphasis on durability reduces the likelihood of device failures, minimizes the need for replacement, and reduces maintenance costs. At 2N, we are so confident in the quality of our work that all 2N hardware comes with a 5-year warranty as standard.
Software stability and system availability
Reliable hardware must be complemented by stable software. Even the most durable access control devices can become liabilities if their software is prone to crashes, bugs, or security vulnerabilities.
High-quality systems should prioritize software excellence - offering regular updates, bug patches, and service availability of over 99.9%, including during planned maintenance. A well-maintained software infrastructure ensures uninterrupted access control and reduces the risk of unexpected downtime.
Cybersecurity: a non-negotiable priority
In an era of increasing cyber threats, IP access control security extends beyond physical barriers. A breach of an IP access control system can lead to unauthorized entry, compromise privacy, and even expose sensitive data.
High-quality systems incorporate robust cybersecurity measures, including encryption, secure authentication protocols, and continuous vulnerability testing. 2N is committed to cybersecurity and demonstrates this commitment by participating in industry-standard programs such as the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database, ensuring transparency and proactive risk management.
The true value of high-end IP access control systems
Security should never be compromised. A low-quality system may seem attractive because of its cheaper price tag – but it will require frequent repairs, replacements, or security patches, ultimately making it more expensive over time.
Prioritizing quality and reliability from the outset ensures a secure, efficient, cost-effective solution that will consistently perform and protect users for years to come.
We’re committed to delivering IP access control solutions that meet these high standards. If you’re interested in learning more, don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of our team!
