Introducing the 2N Evacuation solution: A reliable communication compliant with EN 81-76

Communication is critical in any evacuation scenario. Efficient evacuation procedures rely not only on physical escape routes but also on the clarity and reliability of communication between rescue personnel and those being evacuated. Providing clear, prioritized, and immediate voice communication during an evacuation is essential for protecting lives and ensuring responders can coordinate their efforts across large or complex buildings.

Evacuation communication must meet strict requirements defined in the new EN 81-76 directive – offering high availability, resistance to environmental conditions, and the ability to function independently of standard building infrastructure, which might be compromised during an incident. With this in mind, 2N is proud to introduce a robust, technically refined evacuation communication solution based on our proven 2N Lift8 platform.

Key technical highlights

The 2N Evacuation Solution is based on the 2N Lift8 Central Unit, which now includes a dedicated evacuation mode. When switched into this mode, the central unit enables structured voice communication between evacuation floors and the control room via specialized audio units.

  • Dedicated functionality: When configured for evacuation, a 2N Lift8 Central Unit cannot be simultaneously used for standard elevator emergency communication. In such cases, a second 2N Lift8 Central Unit is required to handle elevator-specific emergency calls.
  • Scalability: A single 2N Lift8 Central Unit can support up to 64 Landing Audio Units via direct 2-wire connections. For every 8 landing units, a Lift8 Splitter is required. Splitters are connected with the Central Unit via 6-wire links. This allows flexible expansion across multi-floor or multi-building sites.
  • Long-distance support: The system supports Landing Audio Units installed up to 600 meters away from the central unit. This makes it an excellent fit for campus-style deployments or locations with spaced-out lift shafts.
  • Device variability: For the landing intercoms, two options are available:
    • A cost-effective Machine Room (MR) type unit requiring no additional communication module.
    • For a more advanced IP phone-based solution, we recommend using the 2N IP phone D7A with shortcut keys for more advanced control.
  • Full compliance with EN 81-76: The solution is fully prepared for the upcoming EU directive, which sets out requirements for the safe evacuation of people with disabilities using lifts during emergencies.
