A guide to the new IP and IK rating testing standards

The world of access control and security hardware is constantly evolving, as are the standards that govern their durability and resistance. One significant change took effect in June 2022, impacting how manufacturers test their newly developed/certified products for ingress protection (IP) and impact protection (IK) ratings. This update brings stricter requirements, ensuring devices meet high-quality and reliability standards in real-world conditions.

What has changed?

Before June 2022, manufacturers tested devices for IP and IK ratings separately. One unit could undergo an IK test — evaluating its resistance to impact — while another unit could be tested for IP protection — assessing its resistance to dust and water. However, the new standard mandates that both tests be consecutively performed on a single device. This means a product must first undergo impact testing (IK) before being subjected to ingress testing (IP).

At 2N, we take an even more rigorous approach to ensure that new products are even more reliable and resilient:

  1. We begin with the IP test – submerging the device fully in water - to ensure it is waterproof.
  2. We then conduct the IK test, simulating real-world impacts by dropping a special metal weight onto the device.
  3. Finally, we repeat the IP test to verify that the product maintains water resistance even after the impact test.

Why this matters for product design

This shift in testing methodology presents new challenges for product development. Under the previous testing regime, engineers could independently optimize separate designs for impact and water resistance. Now, they must take a more holistic approach, ensuring that a single design can withstand both tests without failure.

This results in more complex design considerations, such as:

  • Strengthening enclosures while maintaining seals for water resistance.
  • Using materials that absorb impacts without compromising ingress protection.
  • Developing new structural reinforcements that prevent deformation after an impact.

Do older products need retesting?

Products launched before June 2022 do not need to be retested under this new methodology.  However, due to the changes to the testing standards, these older products may display higher IP and IK ratings than they would have achieved under the new, stricter testing approach.

The change in IP and IK ratings in new products does not mean they are less durable; instead, it reflects the considerably more demanding nature of the combined test process.

What this means for customers

This change ensures that new products are even more reliable and resilient for customers and end-users. Devices designed and tested under the new standard provide enhanced protection against environmental and physical stresses, offering long-term durability and performance. It also means that customers can't merely compare the durability of two different products - they should now check what testing process the products have been through.
